Boomerplay

An ongoing project

I started Boomerplay in 2019 and have rebuilt it several times to learn different languages and frameworks. It began as a phone app and later became a hosted service that people signed up for and paid for. Today I am working on a self-hosted version.

Building it

The current version has a Rust server and Expo clients for web, phone and TV. Its FFmpeg transcoder copies or converts video and audio to suit the device. Working on playback taught me about codecs, keyframes, subtitles and seeking.

I run my own instance at home. I wrote about the setup in self-hosted deploys. The project is still in development.
